Sometimes life takes unexpected turns. I stumbled into the most advanced tax law class at Georgetown—by complete mistake. Surrounded by students with years of experience, I decided to stick with it. Before long, I was outperforming those who had been at it far longer than I had. I graduated near the top of Georgetown Law’s tax program, which led me to roles at the Tax Court, the Department of Justice, and several law firms. But while I loved the work, the environments I encountered were often too stodgy and impersonal. I knew there had to be a better way.

In 2010, right after the financial crisis, I took a leap of faith and launched my own practice. I was young—in my 20s—and competing against veterans with decades of experience.
